Rosario Cathedral, formally the Church of Our Lady of Rosary, ranks as the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Canara region, first built by the Portuguese in 1568. Sultan Tipu's forces demolished the original structure in 1784, and the church was rebuilt in stages through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its illuminated cross and dome serve as a recognisable night time landmark for fishermen returning to port.
