Mandvi's old town was once enclosed by an eight-meter-high fort wall with 25 bastions and multiple gates, built to protect the prosperous 16th-century port. Much of the wall was demolished in the 1990s despite local opposition, but the largest bastion on the southwestern side survives and continues to operate as a lighthouse. Walking the remaining stretches of wall offers a sense of the scale of the original fortification and Mandvi's importance as a historic trading hub.
