Samaguri Satra

Renowned mask-making satra practicing a hereditary craft since the 16th century.

Samaguri Satra carries forward a mask-making tradition started in the sixteenth century by neo-Vaishnavite saint Sankardev, passed down as a hereditary skill from teacher to student within the satra. Artisans here shape bamboo and cloth into elaborate masks depicting figures from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, used in traditional Bhaona theatrical performances across the region. Visitors can watch craftsmen at work and sometimes see brief demonstration performances using the finished masks. The satra has become one of the clearest windows into Majuli's living artistic heritage, distinct from its purely religious institutions.
