Garamur Satra

Major satra with a museum of Ahom-era weapons, jewelry, and utensils.

Established in 1656 by Jayananda Thakura, grandson of Sankardeva, Garamur Satra ranks among the largest and most visited monastic institutions in Majuli. Its museum holds a substantial collection of centuries-old weapons, utensils, and jewelry that trace daily life under Ahom rule, alongside religious artefacts tied to the satra's founding. A pond within the grounds where visitors can feed fish and turtles adds a lighter, more casual element to the visit. Raas Leela performances staged here during the November festival season draw large crowds from across the region.
