Shuklaphanta National Park covers 305 sq km of open grassland, forest and wetland in the far west of Nepal, bounded by the Mahakali river. It was set up in 1976 as a wildlife reserve and later became a national park. Its grasslands hold the largest known herd of swamp deer, and tigers, elephants, hog deer and many grassland birds are found here. A corridor to the south links it with Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in India.
Permits are issued at the park office at Majhgaun near Mahendranagar, and a licensed guide and jeep are needed inside. Some inner grassland routes can stay closed after the monsoon until water drains.
- How to Reach: Fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi and drive about 1 to 2 hours to Mahendranagar. From India, cross at Banbasa in Uttarakhand.
