Tapola, about 30 km from Mahabaleshwar at the confluence of the Koyna and Solshi rivers, is a secluded village on the banks of the vast Shivsagar Lake formed by the Koyna Dam. The 90 km long reservoir surrounded by dense Sahyadri forest gives the area a Kashmir-like character. Activities include boating, kayaking and jungle treks, including the demanding trail to Vasota Fort deep in the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary. The area sees far fewer visitors than Mahabaleshwar itself and offers genuine immersion in Sahyadri wilderness.
