Panchgani, 19 km from Mahabaleshwar, is a quieter hill station named for the five hills surrounding it and renowned for its dramatic Table Land, Asia's second-largest dormant volcanic plateau at 4,500 feet. The tableland offers open views of the Krishna Valley and surrounding ranges and is used for paragliding and photography. The town has a distinct colonial character from its boarding schools, Parsi bungalows and well-preserved market street. Sydney Point and Parsi Point are the principal viewpoints, and strawberry farms dot the approach roads.
