Krishnabai Temple in Old Mahabaleshwar, a short walk from the Panch Ganga Temple, is a small but deeply atmospheric black stone shrine built in 1888 by the ruler of Ratnagiri on a cliff edge above the Krishna Valley. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Krishnabai as the presiding deity of the Krishna River, and a Shivalinga is installed alongside her image. A carved stone Gaumukh spout within the temple is considered the symbolic source of the river. The cliff-top setting and forest canopy surrounding the shrine create a calm well removed from the busier parts of Mahabaleshwar.
