Samanar Hills

Rocky hills near Madurai with 3rd-century BCE Jain monk rock beds and Tamil Brahmi inscriptions, offering panoramic views and birdwatching.

Samanar Hills near Madurai are a series of rocky outcrops containing ancient Jain rock beds (samanar padukais) and Tamil Brahmi inscriptions dating back to the 3rd century BCE. These rock shelters were used by Jain monks as meditation and resting spots during their travels across South India. The site also contains early Tamil-Brahmi graffiti and cup marks carved into the rock. The views from the hilltops over the Madurai plains are excellent, and the site is known for migratory bird sightings. Samanar Hills are part of the broader Arittapatti Biodiversity Heritage Site and represent an important confluence of natural and archaeological heritage.
