Alagar Kovil, officially known as Kallalagar Temple, is a major Vaishnavite shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Kallazhagar (the beautiful one). Located 21 km from Madurai on the Alagar Hills, the temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and dates back to the Sangam era. The temple is especially famous for the annual Chithirai festival, when the deity is taken in a grand procession to the Vaigai River, symbolizing Lord Vishnu attending the wedding of Meenakshi. The temple complex features beautiful Dravidian architecture with stunning mandapams and large tanks.
