Pedana Kalamkari Workshops

Family workshops in Pedana printing Machilipatnam-style Kalamkari cloth with carved wooden blocks and natural dyes.

Pedana, about 10 km from Machilipatnam, is the main centre of Machilipatnam-style Kalamkari, which has a Geographical Indication tag. Unlike the hand-drawn Srikalahasti style, this cloth is printed with carved wooden blocks, using natural dyes and repeated rounds of washing, mordanting and drying. Many small family workshops and printing units work in the town, and some welcome visitors to watch the printing and buy fabric, saris and bedspreads directly. Visit on a weekday morning, and call ahead or ask locally, as most units are working businesses rather than showrooms.
