Temple over the spot where the Buddha was born, in Lumbini's Sacred Garden.

The Maya Devi Temple in the Sacred Garden at Lumbini.

The Maya Devi Temple is the centre of the Lumbini pilgrimage. Inside, a walkway passes over excavated brick foundations to the marker stone that identifies the exact birthplace of the Buddha, with an old stone relief of Maya Devi giving birth. Outside are the Pushkarini pond, where Maya Devi is said to have bathed, the Ashoka Pillar and old bodhi trees hung with prayer flags. Shoes are removed before entering and photography is not allowed inside. Pilgrims of many traditions meditate around the garden in the early morning.
