Inside Pal Thubten Shedrub Ling, the Thousand Buddha Temple, in the Lumbini Monastic Zone.
North of the Sacred Garden, the Lumbini master plan sets out two monastic zones on either side of a long canal. The West Monastic Zone holds Mahayana and Vajrayana monasteries, including those built by Germany, China, Korea and Vietnam, while the East Monastic Zone has Theravada monasteries such as those of Thailand, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Each shows its own country's architecture, from the white marble Thai temple to the painted Tibetan halls. Most are free to enter; remove shoes in prayer halls and dress modestly. Allow at least half a day by bicycle or rickshaw.
- Address: Lumbini Development Zone, Lumbini, Nepal
- Hours: Most monasteries open from morning to late afternoon, and many close for a midday break.
- How to Reach: Starts just north of the Sacred Garden. Rent a bicycle or take a rickshaw from Lumbini Bazaar; the zones are too spread out to walk comfortably in the heat.
