State Museum in Hazratganj, Lucknow is the main government museum of Uttar Pradesh, established in 1863. The museum houses an extensive collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures, Kushana and Gupta period artefacts, natural history exhibits, coins, arms and armour, and paintings from the Lucknow school. The sculpture gallery is particularly notable for its collection of Mathura red sandstone sculptures from the Kushana period. The museum also has a significant collection of Rajput and Mughal miniature paintings and a gallery dedicated to the freedom struggle of Uttar Pradesh. The colonial building is a heritage structure in itself.
