Rumi Darwaza

An 18-metre Nawabi gateway in Lucknow built in 1784, modelled on a Constantinople gate and considered one of the finest examples of Awadhi architecture.

Rumi Darwaza (Turkish Gate) in Lucknow is one of the finest examples of Awadhi architecture and an iconic symbol of the city. Built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the massive gateway stands 18 metres tall and was modelled on a famous gate in Constantinople (Istanbul). The intricate latticework, floral motifs, and graceful curves of the gateway reflect the refined aesthetic sensibility of the Nawabs of Awadh. Located near the Bara and Chota Imambaras on Husainabad Road, Rumi Darwaza is one of Lucknow's most photographed monuments and a UNESCO tentative list site.
