Bara Imambara (Great Imambara) in Lucknow is one of the most remarkable architectural monuments in India, built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula as a famine relief project. The central hall is one of the largest arched chamber constructions in the world, built without beams or girders. Within the complex is the famous Bhulbhulaiya — a labyrinthine maze of winding corridors and staircases on the upper floors with hundreds of interconnecting pathways. The complex also includes the Asfi Mosque and the step-well (Baoli). The Imambara represents the pinnacle of Awadhi architecture and remains one of Lucknow's most visited landmarks.
