Lonar Crater Lake fills a nearly circular depression carved roughly 570,000 years ago by a meteorite strike on the Deccan Plateau, making it the only known hypervelocity impact crater in basaltic rock in India. The saline, alkaline lake occasionally turns a striking shade of pink and supports unusual microbial life alongside more than a hundred bird species. An 8 kilometre trail circles the rim, taking trekkers past forest, grassland, and the ancient temples scattered along the crater's edge.
