Kalapatthar (Kala Patthar)

A year round snow point of dark rock and white snow beyond Thangu, reached with a special permit.

Meaning black rock, Kalapatthar sits above 4,700 meters past Thangu Valley on the way to Gurudongmar Lake, its dark boulders standing out sharply against snow that lingers through most of the year. The site draws visitors for snow play and photography in a setting far less crowded than Lachung's Zero Point. A special permit arranged through a local operator is required, and basic stalls at the top sell hot tea and snacks to visitors bundled against the cold.
