Ludiya Village (Gandhi nu Gam)

A Banni village near Khavda known for painted bhunga homes and crafts, rebuilt by its residents after the 2001 earthquake.

Ludiya, also called Gandhi nu Gam, is a village on the north eastern edge of Banni, about 70 km north of Bhuj and 3 km from Khavda. It is known for its bhungas, the round mud homes of the region, which are decorated inside and out. Traditional crafts here include decorated wooden furniture and embroidery.

After the earthquake of 26 January 2001, the village was rebuilt through a participatory project in which each family helped build its own bhunga, keeping the traditional form. Few bhungas in Ludiya were badly damaged by the quake, which helped persuade villagers to keep building them. Visitors can see the painted homes and buy crafts directly from the families. It fits easily into a day trip to Khavda and Kalo Dungar.

  • How to Reach: Take the Bhuj to Khavda road north for about 70 km. Hire a taxi from Bhuj and combine it with Khavda and Kalo Dungar.
