Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is the oldest and most revered Shiva temple in Kurukshetra, its name, meaning Place of God, giving the city its ancient name Thanesar or Sthaneswar. The Pandavas are believed to have worshipped here and received Lord Shiva's blessings before the Mahabharata battle commenced. A sacred tank within the complex is held to have healing properties and once cured Banasura of leprosy. The ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, also stayed near this temple, which is commemorated by a gurdwara adjoining the premises.
