Brahma Sarovar

The largest sacred tank in Kurukshetra, believed to be created by Lord Brahma, centre of the Gita Jayanti festival.

Brahma Sarovar is the most sacred water body in Kurukshetra and one of the largest man-made tanks in India, believed to have been created by Lord Brahma himself at the beginning of creation. Pilgrims take a ritual bath here in the belief that it confers liberation, and the tank's sanctity increases manifold during solar eclipses when hundreds of thousands gather for the holy dip. A Shiva temple sits on an island in the centre of the lake, reached by a causeway. The sarovar is the principal venue for the Gita Jayanti festival each November-December when oil lamps are floated on the water and the surrounding ghats come alive with aarti, cultural programmes and artisan stalls.
