Mithai Theruvu (SM Street)

Mithai Theruvu (SM Street)

Kozhikode's old sweet-meat street, lined with halwa shops, textile stores and small eateries.

Mithai Theruvu, officially SM Street (Sweet Meat Street), is Kozhikode's oldest shopping street. The name comes from the halwa shops that have lined it for generations, selling Kozhikode halwa in dozens of colours and flavours along with banana chips and other Malabar snacks. Today the narrow, pedestrianised street also has textile and footwear shops, a statue of the writer S. K. Pottekkatt and a small Parsi fire temple nearby. It is busiest in the evening, when locals come to shop and eat.
