The Mishkal Mosque stands beside the Kuttichira pond in Kozhikode's old Muslim merchant quarter. It was built in the 14th century by Nakhuda Mishkal, a wealthy merchant and ship-owner, and is one of the oldest mosques in the city. Its tiered roofs and timber frame follow the Kerala building tradition rather than domes and minarets. The mosque was partly burnt in a Portuguese attack in 1510 and later restored, and it remains an active place of worship. Visitors should dress modestly and ask before entering or taking photos, and avoid prayer times, especially on Friday afternoons.
