Vembanad Lake and Kumarakom Backwaters

Kerala's largest lake, laced with canals, paddy fields, and houseboats around Kumarakom village.

Vembanad Lake stretches roughly 84 kilometers along the Kerala coast and forms the heart of the backwater network around Kumarakom village, about 14 kilometers from Kottayam town. Houseboats, canoes, and motorboats cruise its channels past coconut groves, floating villages, and paddy fields reclaimed below sea level, offering a slower way to experience the region than road travel. Sunrise and sunset cruises are especially popular, when the light on the water draws both birdlife and photographers.
