Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is counted among the 108 Shivalayas said to have been consecrated by Parasurama and is considered one of Kerala's oldest temples. Along with the Ettumanoor and Kaduthuruthy Shiva temples, it forms a sacred trio that pilgrims traditionally visit together before the midday puja. The temple's grand Vaikathashtami festival in November or December draws large numbers of devotees and remains one of the most significant temple events in the Kottayam region.
