Poonjar Palace was built around 1400 AD by the Poonjar Rajas, a dynasty descended from the Pandya kings of Madurai who relocated to Kerala after a 12th century civil war. The wooden palace, about 41 kilometers from Kottayam town, houses a museum of royal antiques including chandeliers, palm leaf manuscripts, and a single piece wooden ayurvedic treatment bed. A nearby replica of the Madurai Meenakshi temple, built to house the deity the family carried with them from Tamil Nadu, adds further historical depth to the site.
