Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

A 14 acre bird sanctuary on Vembanad Lake, home to migratory storks, herons, and local waterfowl.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary occupies 14 acres on the banks of Vembanad Lake and began as a rubber plantation before Englishman George Alfred Baker turned it into a bird haven known as Baker's Estate. Wooded trails lead past canals and marshland where migratory species such as Siberian storks and egrets arrive between November and February, alongside resident cormorants, herons, and kingfishers through the rest of the year. An observatory tower and boat rides along the sanctuary's edge give visitors two different ways to take in the birdlife and the surrounding backwater scenery.
