Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple

A 16th century Shiva temple famed for its Nataraja mural and seven and a half golden elephant statues.

Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple, about 12 kilometers from Kottayam, is believed to be over a thousand years old and gained its present form after renovation in 1542. Its inner sanctum holds a Nataraja mural widely regarded as one of the finest single murals in Kerala, painted during the temple's most artistically active period. During the annual Arattu festival, seven full sized and one half sized gold plated elephant statues known as the Ezhara Ponnana are brought out for public darshan, drawing large crowds from across the state.
