The Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site in Odisha, built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty around 1250 CE. The entire temple is conceived as a colossal stone chariot of Surya, the sun god, with 24 intricately carved stone wheels, each about 3 metres in diameter, and 7 stone horses straining to pull it across the sky. The wheels also function as precise sundials, allowing the time of day to be read from the shadows cast on the spokes. The temple walls are covered in three horizontal bands of sculpture depicting celestial beings, erotic carvings, animals, and scenes of court life that together form one of the most comprehensive records of 13th-century Orissan society. Much of the main tower collapsed centuries ago, but the surviving jagamohana (assembly hall) and the surrounding sculpture remain extraordinary. The site hosts the annual Konark Dance Festival each December, set against the backdrop of the illuminated temple.
