Taraknath Temple

A revered Shiva temple in Hooghly district where devotees bathe in the sacred Dudhpukur tank before offering prayers.

The Taraknath Temple, dedicated to Shiva worshipped as Tarakanatha, stands as a major pilgrimage spot in Tarakeswar. Built in 1729, the temple follows the atchala style of Bengal architecture with a natmandir in front and features four roofs above the sanctum. Nearby shrines honour Kali and Lakshmi Narayan. Pilgrims visit throughout the year, especially on Mondays, and nearly ten million devotees arrive each Shravan carrying holy Ganga water from Nimai Tirtha Ghat.
