South Park Street Cemetery

One of the world's oldest non-church cemeteries, with old carved tombs from Kolkata's colonial past.

Opened in 1767, South Park Street Cemetery is among the oldest non-church burial grounds in the world and one of the more unusual heritage sites in Kolkata. It holds the graves of British soldiers, merchants, and officials from the East India Company era, many marked with tall, elaborately carved tombs and pyramids. The cemetery closed for regular burials around 1830, so what remains today is essentially frozen in that period. Tucked away just off Park Street, it offers a quiet, shaded contrast to the busy shopping and restaurant strip right outside its gates.
