Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral home of the Tagore family, built in the late 1700s in North Kolkata. Rabindranath Tagore, India's first Nobel laureate, was born here in 1861 and also passed away here in 1941. The red brick mansion now works as the Rabindra Bharati Museum, holding more than 700 paintings along with manuscripts, photographs, and personal belongings connected to Tagore and his family. An evening light and sound show retells his life story in both Bengali and English. Given how central Tagore is to Bengali culture and identity, this stands out as one of the more meaningful heritage stops in the city.
