Shri Mahalaxmi Temple, known locally as Ambabai Mandir, is the spiritual heart of Kolhapur and one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India. Built in the 7th century by the Chalukya ruler Karandev, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi worshipped as the guardian deity who defeated the demon Kolhasura, after whom the city is named. The Hemadpanti-style complex houses the iconic black stone idol of Ambabai adorned with precious jewels, flanked by shrines to Mahasaraswati and Mahakali. A unique astronomical phenomenon occurs twice a year when the setting sun illuminates the idol directly through the western entrance. Millions of pilgrims visit annually.
