New Palace Museum, also known as Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Museum, was built between 1877 and 1884 as the residence of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur. The striking eight-angled black stone structure with a central clock tower and Neo-Mughal lobed arches is one of the finest examples of late 19th-century Deccan royal architecture. The museum displays royal weapons, armour, hunting trophies, personal artefacts, paintings depicting scenes from Shivaji's life on the stained glass windows, and memorabilia of the Kolhapur dynasty. The palace is still the official seat of the Kolhapur royal family.
