Nagaland State Museum

The premier museum of Nagaland documenting the heritage of all 16 tribes through artifacts, costumes, weapons, musical instruments, and traditional structures.

The Nagaland State Museum was established in 1970 on Bayavu Hill about 2 km from Kohima town centre. It is the most comprehensive collection of Naga tribal heritage in existence, documenting all 16 tribes that inhabit the state. The museum displays tribal costumes, headgear, weapons including spears and daos, jewellery, musical instruments, pottery, and everyday objects. Wooden carvings, traditional morung structures, and life-size dioramas depicting village life are among the highlights. The museum also covers the natural history of Nagaland with exhibits on local flora and fauna. For anyone visiting Kohima without prior knowledge of the extraordinary diversity of Naga tribal culture, the museum is an essential starting point.
