Kohima War Cemetery stands on Garrison Hill, the site of one of the most ferocious battles of the Second World War. In April and May 1944, a small garrison of British and Indian soldiers held the hill against a vastly larger Japanese force in fighting so close that soldiers battled across the Deputy Commissioner's tennis court. The Japanese defeat here marked the turning point of the war in Asia. The cemetery, maintained immaculately by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, contains over 1,420 graves with individual stone markers bearing names and epitaphs. The most famous inscription in the cemetery reads: "When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today." A visit here is one of the most emotionally powerful experiences in northeast India.
