Kisama Heritage Village

The permanent venue of the Hornbill Festival, a living tribal heritage complex showcasing the architecture, morungs, and traditions of all 16 Naga tribes.

Kisama Heritage Village, whose name combines the two nearby villages of Kigwema and Phesama, was developed by the Government of Nagaland to preserve and showcase the traditions of all 16 Naga tribes. The complex contains traditional morung structures, the communal meeting halls of each tribe, built in authentic tribal architectural styles with carved totems, animal skulls, and tribal motifs. Each morung represents a different tribe and displays their weapons, costumes, instruments, and crafts. Kisama is best known as the permanent venue of the Hornbill Festival, held every year in the first week of December, when all tribes come together for dance, music, food, craft, and competitive games. Outside the festival period the village is still open and offers an excellent introduction to Naga tribal culture.
