Japfu Peak rises to 3,048 metres south of Kohima and is the second highest peak in Nagaland. The mountain is famous for a rhododendron tree near the summit that stands about 30 feet tall with an 11-foot girth and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the tallest of its species. The peak is also one of the best places in the world to spot the Blyth's tragopan, a brilliantly coloured and highly endangered pheasant species. The trek to the summit starts from the village of Kigwema and takes about 4 to 5 hours. The views from the top extend over Kohima, the surrounding hills, and on clear days into Manipur. The forest along the trail is rich in birdsong and wildflowers.
