Pattanam Excavation Site

Pattanam Excavation Site

Archaeological site near North Paravur with Roman amphora fragments, beads and other finds linked to the ancient Muziris trade.

Pattanam is a village near North Paravur where excavations since 2007 have produced Roman amphora fragments, West Asian pottery, glass and stone beads, and the remains of brick structures and a wharf. Many scholars link the site with Muziris, the ancient pepper port described by Roman writers, although this is still debated. There is little to see in the excavated fields themselves, so most visitors view the finds at the small excavation museum run under the Muziris Heritage Project. Check opening days before you go.
