Paravur Synagogue

Paravur Synagogue

Restored synagogue in North Paravur, now a museum of the Kerala Jewish community within the Muziris Heritage Project.

The Paravur Synagogue in North Paravur served one of the Jewish communities that settled along the Malabar coast. The present building dates from the 17th century and follows the Kerala plan, with a long entrance passage and gatehouse leading to the prayer hall. Most of the community emigrated to Israel in the 1950s, and the synagogue was later restored under the Muziris Heritage Project. It now works as a museum, with displays on the history, customs and trade links of Kerala's Jews. Check opening days before visiting, as Muziris Heritage sites usually close on one weekday.

  • Address: Jew Street, North Paravur, Ernakulam District, Kerala 683513
