Cheraman Juma Masjid

Cheraman Juma Masjid is widely regarded as the first mosque built in India, raised in 629 AD by Malik Ibn Dinar not long after the last Cheraman Perumal king is said to have converted to Islam. Its facade resembles a traditional Kerala temple rather than a typical mosque, a design retained through centuries of renovation after storm and flood damage. Now part of the Muziris Heritage Project, the mosque houses a small museum and audio visual displays on Islam's arrival on the Malabar coast.
