Kodaikanal Solar Observatory was established in 1899 on the southern tip of the Palani Hills to study solar phenomena and monsoon patterns. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, it houses the oldest continuous series of solar data collected in India. The public astronomy museum displays historical telescopes, live solar images, and spectral displays. The Evershed Effect was first detected here in 1909.
