Jew Town

A historic Kochi neighbourhood once home to one of the world's oldest Jewish diaspora communities, now famous for antiques, spices, and the 1568 Paradesi Synagogue.

Jew Town in Mattancherry, Kochi, is a historic neighbourhood that was once the centre of the Cochin Jewish community, one of the oldest Jewish diaspora communities in the world. The area grew around the Paradesi Synagogue built in 1568 and was a thriving trading hub for spices and antiques. Today, Jew Town is famous for its antique shops, spice warehouses, curio stores, and heritage atmosphere. While only a handful of the original Jewish families remain, the neighbourhood preserves its unique heritage through its architecture, the active synagogue, and the continued trade in antiques and spices that made it famous.
