Western Group of Temples

The main UNESCO Heritage cluster at Khajuraho housing the finest Chandela temples including Kandariya Mahadev and Lakshmana, renowned for their soaring towers and carvings.

The Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho is the largest and most visited cluster of temples, forming the core of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built primarily by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE, this group includes some of the finest medieval temple architecture in India — including the Kandariya Mahadev, Lakshmana, Vishwanath, Chitragupta, Devi Jagadambi, and Chausath Yogini temples. The temples face east and are set on high platforms, their soaring shikhara towers creating a dramatic skyline. The complex is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is illuminated during the famous Khajuraho Dance Festival held every February.
