Khajuraho Temples

A UNESCO World Heritage site, this group of 9th–11th century temples is renowned for their exquisite Nagara-style architecture.

The Khajuraho Temples are a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Madhya Pradesh, built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these temples are celebrated worldwide for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their exquisite erotic sculptures, which represent only about 10% of the total carvings — the rest depicting everyday life, celestial beings, and devotional scenes. Originally 85 temples were built; about 25 survive today. The Western Group, with the iconic Kandariya Mahadev and Lakshmana temples, is the most visited. The temples reflect medieval India's philosophical view of Kama as one of the four aims of life.
