Chausath Yogini Temple

The oldest surviving structure at Khajuraho, a late 9th-century open-air temple with 64 originally, now 35 cells, uniquely rectangular in plan.

The oldest surviving structure at Khajuraho, this late 9th-century open-air temple predates the famous sandstone complexes by decades. Built entirely from coarse granite, it once housed 64 cells for the Yogini attendants of Goddess Kali, plus a central shrine now in ruins. Only 35 cells survive today. Unlike other Yogini temples across India, this one has a rectangular plan, making it architecturally unique. Quiet and rarely crowded, it sits just off the main Western Group entrance near Shiva Sagar Lake.
