A Chandela-era hilltop fort in the Panna district, about 65 km from Khajuraho, Ajaygarh served as a late-period stronghold of the dynasty that built the famous temples. Perched at 688 metres in the Vindhya ranges, it is reached by climbing around 500 steep stone steps. The reward is sweeping views of the Ken River and forested plains. Inside the walls sit ruins of palaces, two rock-cut water tanks, a Chandela temple, and three Jain temples built in the Khajuraho style.
