Gandhi Sarovar

A serene glacial lake at 3,900 metres, also called Chorabari Tal, where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed after his death in 1948.

Gandhi Sarovar, also known as Chorabari Tal, is a crystal-clear glacial lake sitting at about 3,900 metres, roughly 3 km from Kedarnath Temple. It lies at the mouth of the Chorabari glacier and is fed by glacial meltwater. The lake gained its popular name after a portion of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed here following his assassination in 1948. According to mythology, the Saptrishis learned yoga here from Lord Shiva. The lake offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The trail from Kedarnath passes through rugged alpine terrain and takes about 2 to 3 hours return.
