Bhairavnath Temple sits on a hillock about 500 metres from the Kedarnath Temple and is dedicated to Lord Bhairav, the fierce manifestation of Shiva. Bhairav is considered the Kshetrapal, the protector of the entire Kedar valley. According to belief, when the Kedarnath Temple closes for winter and the deity is moved to Ukhimath, Bhairav remains and guards the valley through the harsh Himalayan winter. Completing a visit to Bhairavnath after darshan at Kedarnath is considered essential to completing the yatra. The temple offers sweeping views of the Kedarnath valley and the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
