Sakya Tangyud Gompa (New Monastery)

A monastery built in 2009 and inaugurated by the Dalai Lama, standing on the main road through New Kaza.

The Sakya Tangyud Gompa, often called the New Monastery, sits directly on the main road connecting Old and New Kaza. Built in 2009 and inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama, it belongs to the Sakya sect and is distinct from the older, more remote Tangyud Monastery near Komic. Eight stupas representing key events in the Buddha's life line its approach, backed by rows of prayer wheels. Visitors can join the monks for morning chanting, and the monastery's easy access makes it Kaza's most visited religious site, requiring no separate trip out of town.
